Clean Your Home’s Air With This Simple, Simmer Pot-pourri

The perfect fall simmer pot-pourri

Fall is famous for its delicious scents like pumpkin spice lattes, freshly baked apple pie, herbs and spices like cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Oftentimes, we resort to buying candles or using plug-ins that mimic the real scents we enjoy, but they’re often filled with toxic chemicals. Did you know synthetic fragrance is linked to a host of things like increased cancer risk and hormone disruption? Yikes!

We know it’s important to keep your space smelling fresh and clean, so what's a toxin-free way to fill your home with delicious fall fragrances? Boiling herbs & spices is a great solution. It releases essential oils into the air that smell great, plus they can bind to and remove pollutants trapped in your home cleaning your air. So swap out your candles and try this stovetop potpourri recipe!

Fun fact - our cleaning products are never scented with synthetic fragrance, just essential oils which means your space is safe with us! 🌿 ✨

A fun way to swap out unwanted chemicals while reducing waste and welcoming inviting fragrances, is to try our simple, stovetop “Fall Harvest” pot-pourri recipe. You can use items you already have on hand, items that are close to expiration, or items you acquire at the store while doing your holiday shopping.

Suggested items for “Fall Harvest” Pot-pourri (include as many, or few items as you’d like)

  • 1 orange, sliced

  • 1 apple, sliced

  • 1 cup cranberries (fresh or frozen)

  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks

  • Tbsp whole clove

  • 1 or 2 whole Star Anise

  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary

  • Fresh water

Instructions

  1. Put all individual ingredients into a medium to large pot

  2. Fill the pot about three quarters of the way with water

  3. Bring the mixture to a low boil over medium-high heat

  4. Immediately reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer (no lid)

  5. Allow the pot-pourri to simmer for as long as desired

  6. Be mindful to periodically check the water level, adding more if needed (as water evaporates over time) in order to avoid burning the ingredients

Your mixture will remain fragrant and fresh for 1-2 days after the initial boil depending on how long the mixture is simmering for. You also have the availability to add any fresh ingredients over time in order to strengthen desired scents.

Lastly, get creative with it! Whether you have all of the suggested ingredients above, or you have a few, make it your own. A simple combination we love is sliced orange, cranberries, cinnamon sticks and rosemary. Feel free to include different scents like mint and lemon for more uplifting, refreshing scents to fill your home.
