Best Practices to Make Sure Your Home is Holiday Ready 🎄

Happy Holidays from your friends here at Dee’s Green Cleaning! We know that hosting for the holidays can be an exciting, yet stressful time. With work, shopping preparations, cooking and cleaning - the checklist seems to pile up!

You’re not alone if you don’t know where to start! Here’s a few things that we recommend to give your home the extra clean and love that it deserves, whether you’re having friends and family over, or if your home is the prep spot for all your holiday endeavors.

✔️ One simple way to begin your pre-holiday prep is to wash your linens. Towels, bedding, table linens, and even your throw-rugs will all benefit from a holiday refresh. Nothing says “welcome” like fresh scents and cozy textures, and no one likes a stinky blanket. Always double check care instructions to ensure your linens get the most of their lifetime. We prefer natural fabrics over synthetics which can emit toxic chemicals and pollute the environment. We also love to use wool dryer balls to replace dryer sheets. These take away static, reduce waste, and help you save money over time. Bonus - you can add your favorite essential oils to dryer balls to leave your linens smelling extra fresh.

✔️ The next item on our holiday home checklist can be fun for the whole family. Organize and clear out any extra coats, shoes, toys and items in entryways and living spaces in order clear clutter and provide space for yourself & your loved ones. If you have children, we recommend getting them involved to help teach them respect for items and the value of having a clean, tidy space. You can even make a game of it by hiding a few dollars around the house under items to be picked up, and letting them keep it for holiday shopping funds if they find it all 🥸💸

✔️ Holidays can bring lots of joy, but unfortunately they can also bring colds & flus! 🤒🤧 Be sure to sanitize high-touch surfaces such as door handles, light switches, faucet handles, and areas of countertops and tables that are often used. Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water with a few drops of tea tree oil to make a powerful, eco-conscious sanitizing spray. Do not mix peroxide with bleach, ammonia, or vinegar as this can create toxic fumes. We highly recommend avoiding bleach & ammonia all-together. More to come on those topics for the future.

✔️ Often neglected spaces we love to make sparkle are doors and baseboards. We use our Dee’s Green All Purpose Cleaner and clean cotton cloths. Spray directly onto the surface if it’s heavily soiled while being mindful of where the spray ends up and promptly wipe, or directly spray your cloth and wipe down ledges and surfaces where grime likes to hide. If your looking for a less involved approach, extendable wool or fleece dusters are great for dusting the easy to reach, or not so easy to reach baseboards around your home.

✔️Lastly, keeping a fresh fridge and a clean oven will help ensure your holiday feast taste great (unless your bad cook & there’s no helping you 🤭) But there’s nothing worse than a smokey oven or a funky fridge to ruin all your hard work & to make your house stink. We recommend making a shopping list so you can buy only what you need to reduce food waste and ensure spoiled items don’t stink up your fridge. Additionally, baking trays under your casserole dishes will help keep a bubbly, sticky mess off your oven floor and is easy to remove if it starts getting smokey. If your holiday creation does boil over, cleaning the area as soon as the oven cools down will keep your feast from spoiling your next meal or living beyond the holidays.

If this all sounds amazing, yet you can’t begin to imagine how or when you’ll find the time to check all these things off your list - no worries! Let our Green Clean Team take something off your plate so you can fill it with what matters most. Whether it’s pre, or post holiday, give us a call for all your home cleaning needs!
